What is Mental Health First Aid?
MHFA is designed to teach you how to give initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or worsening mental illness. The course also covers what to do if someone is experiencing a mental health crisis.
Physical first aid is something we've all heard about, right? MHFA was inspired by the effective physical first aid model, in which first aid is given until the client obtains expert assistance or the crisis is resolved. MHFA was created in Australia over 20 years ago, and over 3 million individuals worldwide have been Accredited Mental Health First Aiders since then.
Why Mental Health First Aid?
Mental illness is common, and a lot of people don’t know what to say if someone is showing signs or symptoms of a mental health problem. What would you do if someone in your workplace displayed signs of a substance problem? How would you approach them? What would you say?
Would you know what to do or say if a friend was experiencing symptoms of psychosis?
By participating in the MHFA course, you will learn how to assist someone experiencing a common mental illness. You will also learn how to help someone who might be experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or a mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
