Why Mental Health First Aid?
Prevalence: Mental illness is common, it is estimated that 20% or 1 in 5 will experience a mental health condition in any one year.
Universal Impact: Mental health issues touch all of us at some point, either by experiencing it ourselves or caring for someone who does. Mental ill health does not discriminate.
Knowledge and Skills Gap: Many individuals might encounter situations where they recognise something is wrong but struggle to find the right words or actions to help. And most people don’t learn about mental health at school. This is where the Mental Health First Aid Course can teach people the skills they would not otherwise learn.
Addressing Challenges: The course teaches participants to handle various scenarios, such as recognising signs of anxiety, depression and substance use issues or symptoms of psychosis in friends, family, or colleagues.
Comprehensive Training: Participants will learn to recognise signs, provide people with the confidence on how to approach someone about their mental health, talk about suicide and know where to get appropriate professional help. This aid continues until professional help is received or the crisis subsides.
Guidance and Resources: The course also provides guidance on where to get professional help, reputable resources and additional forms of support.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Purpose: The course is designed to provide initial support to someone the help developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis
Concept: Similar to physical first aid training, MHFA is a First Aid Course for Mental Health and aims to provide initial support until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves. It doesn’t teach you how to diagnose or become a therapist but how to provide initial support.
Origins: Betty Kitchener developed Mental Health First Aid in Australia two decades ago. It has since gained global recognition, with over 3 million people trained worldwide.
Course: The MHFA Standard Course is a 12-hour program and 14 hours for Youth Mental Health First Aid. Delivered either face-to-face or online via the blended model.
Action Plan: You will learn the ALGEE framework to guide you on how to have a mental health conversation. We will teach you how to respond appropriately and supportively in various mental health situations.
