What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid. It teaches you to give initial support to someone who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing one, or in a mental health crisis. It does not teach you to diagnose or act as a therapist.
MHFA was developed in Australia in 2000 by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm, and is now delivered in over 50 countries with 8.5 million people trained worldwide.
What you'll take away
Skills to support someone whose mental health is declining, in the workplace or community
Confidence to start non-judgemental conversations about mental health
Knowledge of where to find professional help and reliable resources
Self-care strategies for your own wellbeing
Accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider
A set of mental health resources to keep
Becoming a workplace MHFA Officer? We'll support you with resources to take back to your team.
Why Mental Health First Aid?
Mental health problems are common. About 1 in 5 Australians aged 16 to 85 experience a mental health condition in any given year [source: ABS National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing 2020–22; confirm the current figure].
Most of us will be affected at some point, either personally or because someone close to us is. Most people never learn what to say or do when someone they care about is struggling, and mental health isn't taught in most schools.
MHFA closes that gap. You'll learn to:
Recognise signs of anxiety, depression, substance use problems and psychosis
Approach someone and start a conversation about how they're going
Talk about suicide safely and directly
Respond in a crisis
Connect people with appropriate professional help and reputable resources
Support continues until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
How it's delivered
Face-to-face: Standard MHFA is run over two full days at your workplace or a venue of your choice.
Blended: 5–7 hours of eLearning plus instructor-led sessions, which can be face-to-face or online. Available anywhere in Australia.
Working with your organisation
MHFA works best as part of a wider wellbeing strategy. We work with organisations to plan and embed the program, promote it internally, encourage help-seeking and reduce stigma. This can include:
